MEMPHIS (AP) - A federal judge in Nashville says he isn't convinced photo IDs issued by the public library in Memphis meet the state standard to vote.
But The Commercial Appeal reported U.S. District Judge Kevin H. Sharp also expressed concern at a Wednesday hearing that poll workers were discouraging people who presented the IDs from voting on provisional ballots. That would give them two business days to present an acceptable ID at the election commission office and validate their ballot.
Sharp told deputy state attorneys to have the Shelby County Election Commission instruct poll workers to encourage provisional ballot voting.
Sharp, however, denied the city's request for a temporary injunction ordering the election commission to accept the library-issued IDs.
