KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A home in West Knoxville's Sequoyah Hills community sustained severe damage when it caught fire Monday night and again Tuesday morning.

The first fire at 404 Boxwood Square near Kingston Pike started Monday around 10:20 p.m.

The homeowners, Martha Shatley and Steve Miller, were alerted to the fire by their smoke detector and got out safely, but couldn't find their six cats.

On Tuesday, Miller said, "We still can't find four of them so they are still out there somewhere so we hope the people of Sequoyah Hills, if they see them wandering around, will give us a call."

The fire was so intense crews had give up trying to fight it from inside the structure.

Additional crews were brought in to help extinguish the fire, including an aerial ladder truck.

No one was injured.

Neighbors called the fire department again around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, reporting smoke coming from the house. The fire department says it was caused by burning embers between the ceiling in the garage and the floor above it.

KFD says it's not unusual to see a fire rekindle.

The homeowners spoke with 6 News off camera, saying they're more worried about their cats than any of the destroyed belongings. They were able to salvage some items from the home, but the couple considers the home a complete loss.

Fire investigators say they believe the fire was accidental, but have not yet released a cause.
