Man arrested for North Knox County bank robbery

KNOXVILLE (WATE) – A man was arrested Tuesday as the suspect in a North Knox County bank robbery Monday afternoon.

Gordon Harold Williams, 49, of Knoxville, is charged with robbing the BB&T Bank at 7108 Maynardville Pike.

According to a court affidavit, Williams admitted to robbing the bank when he was arrested. He also confessed to having an explosive device designed to be detonated with a lighter and a liquid accelerant in a backpack during the robbery.

Authorities said they found a potential improvised explosive device at an address in Fountain City. The Knoxville Police Department Bomb Squad and Knoxville Fire Department HAZMAT responded to the scene and recovered the device.

Williams appeared in federal court in Knoxville Tuesday and pleaded not guilty.
