First term Rep. Chuck Fleischmann of Chattanooga is facing a strong challenge for the Republican nomination from dairy executive Scottie Mayfield of Athens and Weston Wamp of Chattanooga, who is the son of Zach Wamp.
Wamp held the third district seat for eight terms before a failed run for the Tennessee governor's office.
Another race being watched by local political observers is the election for Anderson County mayor. Democrat Warren Gooch is running against Republican Terry Frank. They are vying to fill the office held by Myron Iwanski.
Anderson County commissioners appointed Iwanski to the seat following the January 2011 resignation of then-mayor Rex Lynch. Iwanski chose not to run for the office, but instead is running again for a seat on the commission.
In Knox County four Republicans are seeking to fill a new seat in the Tennessee House.
Retired Knox County Housing Authority Director Bo Pierce, former Knox County Sheriff Tim Hutchison, insurance agent Roger Kane, and financial analyst Joey McCaulley are hoping to win their first campaign for a state legislative office.
There are no Democrats on the ballot for District 89.
The Knox County ballot also includes candidates for county law director, school board seats and other positions.
Eight questions on Knox County Charter amendments are also on the ballot. A copy of the Knox County sample ballot is available online.
Early voting ended July 28.
