KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A South Knoxville restaurant had trouble with its refrigeration system so several hundred pounds of food had to be thrown out when a heath inspector visited.
Food for Thought has never seen this amount of food ordered thrown out before. However, none of the three coolers in the restaurant were at temperature.
Passing but problems:
Jumbo Buffet at 7430 Chapman Highway - Grade: 72
The Knox County Health Department considers a score below 70 as unsanitary.
There were several critical violations.
To begin with, 483 pounds of food were discarded after the inspector found the temperature in the refrigerators at 52 degrees.
Eighty-two pounds of oysters, 70 pounds of steak, 65 pounds of chicken and a whole bunch of other food was tossed due to the potential for contamination.
The air conditioning was turned off and the back door was open, allowing hot air to enter the restaurant and kitchen.
Moldy lemons and oranges in the walk-in cooler were also ordered thrown out.
And raw food in the walk-in cooler was stored beside ready-to-eat food, leading to the potential for cross contamination.
