KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Gas prices continue to rise in Knoxville, jumping another $0.06 since Thursday.

"We do a lot of traveling through all ends of Knoxville and we go through, this truck, probably $80 every three to four days," said Tim Cupp.

Drivers are frustrated again with the rising cost to fill up their tanks. "You try to find ways to carpool or take kids to practice. You try to pick up two or three kids. Then you try to the next week, other parents pick up your kids, try a few little tricks to save gas money here and there," Cupp explained.

While Knoxville's average unleaded price of $3.35 a gallon falls in line with the state average, both are lower than the national average by more than $0.20.

"There's not really a good explanation for why prices have jumped locally. Since yesterday, they're up six cents. If you look at the national average, it's up three cents since yesterday," explained Stephanie Milani, with AAA.

The prices of crude oil have increased as well as the wholesale price, which explains some of the increase.

There is hope on the horizon, though, if history repeats itself this year.

"Last year, prices did start falling after Labor Day. So if that happens again this year, if no other factors are involved, typically after Labor Day you see the demand for gasoline decrease. It's the end of the summer driving season. Then also, the refineries can switch back over to the less expensive refining oils," Milani explained.
