KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Tax free weekend is underway and Knox shoppers are taking advantage of major back-to-school bargains.

Families across the city braved the traffic and crowds to cash in on tax free savings.

"We have to take advantage of the tax free weekend," said Mikki Jacobs, a mother of two.

The Jacobs family joined the crowds at Target at Turkey Creek to save money on their long list of school supplies.

"We normally spend about $100 per kid on school supplies so that will be about $9 (in savings)," Jacobs said.

Prices are already low on the school year staples, but families with several kids say every penny counts.

"I love to save money so I'll do anything to save money here and there," explained Kendra Lawrence, a mother of two elementary students.

But it's the big ticket items like computers that have the crowds lining up. "I got myself a MacBook Pro and a laser printer," Carlye Hunsucker said.

Hunsucker is an incoming freshman at the University of Tennessee and says she's happy to save money where she can on her list of college needs.

"I got a good deal and got about $300 off so I'm happy about that," she said.

For many, shopping is an all weekend event, going all over town to hit up every sale.

"We'll be in the line at the Apple store later to get (my daughter's) laptop," Jacobs said as she checked out at Target. "That's a substantial savings so that will save us about $100."

Whether it's computers or pencils and notebooks, families can watch the savings add up this weekend.

Tax free weekend applies to clothing, school supplies and computers for $1,500 or less. It goes through Sunday at midnight.
