MARYVILLE (WATE) - A measure to increase sales tax in Blount County moved forward Monday night.
Members of the Blount County Commission Budget Committee unanimously approved the proposal for a half-cent increase.
The measure is not a done deal yet, however, because on Tuesday the agenda committee will vote on the measure.
If the measure passes that committee then the full commission will take a vote later this month to put it on a referendum for the November ballot.
The sales tax increase discussion was prompted when Alcoa voters passed a sales tax increase.
The revenue generated from the tax increase in Alcoa will fund a new $30 million high school.
