Young boys do thousands of dollars in damage at Loudon County church

LENOIR CITY (WATE) - Two boys who attended vacation Bible school at a Loudon County church later did thousands of dollars worth of damage to the facility, Sheriff Tim Guider said.

Members of Lee Heights Baptist Church, off Muddy Creek Road, found the damage in July when they arrived for Wednesday night services.

Sheriff Guider said the vandals used children's toys and art supplies to damage the sanctuary, fellowship hall and Sunday school rooms. They also smeared feces, urine and food saved for needy families on walls and floors.

The sheriff said the boys are a six year old and a seven year old. They aren't members of the church, but they went to vacation Bible school there the week before.

Church officials decided not to press charges against the boys due to their age.

The state Department of Children's Services was called to investigate because of the boys' apparent lack of supervision.

Several volunteers helped clean up the church and make repairs.
