CARYVILLE (WATE) - Tennessee Department of Transportation construction has gone on for weeks on Interstate 75, causing lane closures and heavy traffic. It started with a landslide that happened in March.
An end is finally in sight for the I-75 construction. The staff at businesses like 141 Wine and Spirits are excited for customer flow to be back to normal.
"Ready to get it over with. The congestion and the clutter and hopefully people will be able to travel through here without being interrupted," said Jeff Hoskins, co-owner of 141 Wine and Spirits.
Hoskins says the construction has hurt his business. "It has hurt us with detours and so forth. They opened the interstate Thursday, and we definitely saw an increase in traffic," Hoskins explained.
Drivers are also looking forward to less congestion on the interstate. "We can get to school faster and work faster and everywhere else," said Cheyenne King, a driver in the area.
Many say the construction has been an inconvenience. "You can't hardly go anywhere anymore and if you want to go somewhere, you've got to leave an hour earlier," King said.
Right now, there are two southbound lanes open and one northbound lane, which opens up at night and on weekends.
Workers are preparing the roadway for paving sometime this week. Clean up and pavement markings also need to be done before the project is complete.
TDOT should have a better idea of the exact completion date by Friday. It was originally supposed to be finished in September.
