New security leaders appointed in Oak Ridge

OAK RIDGE (AP) - The security contractor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced a new acting general manager after removing top leadership following an unprecedented security breach at the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant by a group of protesters.

WSI confirmed that Steven C. Hafner is acting general manager effective Tuesday after Lee Brooks was removed from the position.

Three anti-nuclear protesters, including an 82-year-old nun, got through the plant's security fences on July 28.

WSI also named John Garrity director of the Y-12 Protective Force after Gary Brandon was removed from his position as well.

Brooks and Brandon are awaiting reassignments by G4S Government Solutions, the parent company of WSI.

The Oak Ridge plant manufactures nuclear warhead parts and stores the nation's supply of highly enriched uranium.
