KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The first day of school in Knox County can mean traffic congestion and honking horns.
That's why Regina Eubanks took her kids to Belle Morris Elementary School early on Tuesday.
"I figured the traffic would be kind of heavy this morning and being hectic in the classroom, and I really wanted to know who my kid's teacher was because I missed open house last night, but yeah, that was really the reason," Eubanks said.
She dropped off kids at two schools this morning, but said because of her early start she knew she'd have no trouble getting to work on time.
Jerry Julian has been a crossing guard for nearly 30 years, nine of them at Belle Morris. He says the one traffic stop at his school Tuesday was more than he normally gets and morning traffic was lighter than usual.
Of course, there were a few speeders. "You've got some. We have a flashing light down there and a flashing light up here, but some of them don't obey it. When you get a ticket and go before a judge speeding in a school area, he'll burn you up," Julian said.
It helps Julian though, knowing that he's got students trained to pay attention. "Just stop them on the curb while maybe a car or something's coming and talk to them and say, when you see one coming don't you get out there until I tell you to. If I'm not here, look both ways before you cross the street," he explained.
The rain held off while Julian was on duty, but it rolled in quickly afterward.
