KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A former Vol football player with a long criminal history was shot early Wednesday in the parking lot of a West Knoxville Walmart, then apparently walked to a nearby convenience store where police found him.

Knoxville police say Travis Cozart, 37, of Knoxville, was shot sometime before 1:30 a.m. He told officers he had been shot in the parking lot of the Walmart at 8445 Walbrook Drive.

Cozart was found at the Pilot, 205 Walker Springs Rd., about two-tenths of a mile from the Walmart.

Police say he was taken to UT Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Cozart was a well known high school football star in the 1990s, but he was kicked off the UT football team after an assault charge.

He has a history of drug arrests, was convicted of allowing his baby girl to swallow cocaine and was arrested in 2007 for purse snatching.
