KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The University of Tennessee, Knoxville will have its first new residence hall in 40 years in the fall of 2014. Construction is estimated at $59 million.
"It's a large facility," said director of University Housing Frank Cuevas,
"Primarily will be for freshmen and sophomore. It will appeal to juniors
and seniors as well."
The new facility, at the corner of Andy Holt Avenue and Melrose Avenue, will house 700 undergraduate male and female students. It will have suites for two people and super suites for four people.
"I definitely think it's time for a new
dorm," said UT sophomore Rachel Sproles. "The other dorms aren't too bad, but it would be nice to have a new
dorm for future students."
Wireless Internet will be available in the building, and residents will have two restaurants where they can eat, Tortilla Fresca and Subway.
The hall will offer more community space than UT's 12 existing residence halls, and its central core will be made up of lounges for students to use.
Frank Cuevas, university housing: "It's being funded through student rental fees and
state revenue bonds approved by the state building commission," said Cuevas.
Each type of room will have a different rental rate.
