KINGSTON (WATE) - The court set bond Thursday at $250,000 for a man charged with killing his ex-girlfriend in Roane County last fall. It's half the amount the state requested, but more than double what the defense sought.

Shawn Nelson Smoot is charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Brooke Morris, 23, of Knoxville. Her body was found on a Roane County road in October 2011.

Smoot was placed on Roane County's Most Wanted List in June after he didn't turn himself in at a scheduled court appearance. He was arrested a few days later in Mississippi, then extradited to Tennessee.

His original bond was set at $100,000, but it was revoked when he failed to appear. The state and the defense made their bond requests in a hearing on August 10.

Along with setting Smoot's bond Thursday, the court also ordered him to report to the state probation office in Kingston twice a month and to sign a waiver of extradition form.

The family of Brooke Morris has said they thought Smoot's $100,000 bond was too low for the crime.
