CHATTANOOGA (AP) - A newspaper investigation of the 10th Judicial District has found that important cases were botched through ineptness or misconduct under District Attorney General R. Steven Bebb, that taxpayer money was misused and that the office played favorites during criminal prosecutions.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports it spent more than seven months investigating allegations in the judicial district that encompasses Bradley, McMinn, Monroe and Polk counties. The newspaper inspected financial documents and court records, and interviewed attorneys, police officers and witnesses.
Bebb defended the actions of his office during an interview with the newspaper in July. He said employees have made mistakes, but they always try to correct them.
He says the one direction he gives his staff is "to do their level best to do justice in every case."
