More cars expected on the road this Labor Day weekend

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Motorists apparently aren't going to let rising gas prices and a sluggish economy keep them from traveling this Labor Day weekend.

Motor club AAA says 2.9 percent more people will travel at least 50 miles from home this holiday compared to last year.

For traffic measurement purposes, the Labor Day weekend runs from Thursday, Aug. 30, to Monday, Sept. 3.

AAA estimates 33 million will travel 50 miles or more from home that weekend, up from 32.1 million over the same time last year.

That could be the highest travel volume since 2008, when Labor Day travel dropped because of the recession.

Holiday travel has been on the rise all year, with a 1.2 percent increase for Memorial Day and a 4.9 percent increase for the 4th of July.
