KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A driver was injured Wednesday morning when his car caught fire on a North Knoxville street.

When firefighters arrived on N. Central Avenue near the intersection of Woodland Avenue, they found a 2004 Mercury Sable with the trunk and interior in full flame.

The driver wasn't with or near the vehicle as the flames were extinguished. He had apparently run down the street to a convenience store, according to Knoxville Fire Department spokesman D.J. Corcoran.

A Rural/Metro ambulance caught up with the driver at the store and took him to UT Medical Center.

The cause of the fire has not yet been undetermined, but Corcoran said it may have started in the trunk where a melted plastic gasoline container was found.
