MORRISTOWN (WATE) - The office has reopened and the patients have returned to a discount dentures clinic in Morristown after another dentist was dismissed.

It's been nearly a month since Dr. David Harrison was fired by Affordable Care, the corporation that owns the Affordable Dentures franchise.

The company's decision followed a 6 News investigation about irregular practices at the dentist's clinic. That office in Morristown was closed for a week so the corporate office could get things organized.

6 News investigation

  • July 16: Patients say unlicensed Morristown dental office worker performs care
  • July 25: More patients accuse Morristown dental office worker of improper care
  • July 30: Morristown dentist fired after patients speak out about problem care

Now the clinic is back in business, and the waiting room is busy. Some patients were called and asked to return. Others received letters telling them a new dentist, Dr. Michael Doyle, has taken over and would see them.

Annie Norwood was one of the first to return and be treated by Dr. Doyle. "He talked to you, explained things to you and just cared," she said, of her latest visit.

"I hated to see this office fall from grace, and I wanted to do my part to help restore the name," Dr. Doyle said.

In July, Annie showed 6 On Your Side upper dentures that never fit so she didn't wear them.    As a result, she was never able to bite into a hamburger without gumming it.

Annie said she rarely saw former dentist Dr. David Harrison, despite her numerous requests.

The dentist's wife, Jennifer Harrison, would see Annie instead. Jennifer Harrison told patients she was a dental assistant, but she wasn't.

Another patient, Teresa Underwood, said Jennifer Harrison even pulled some of her teeth.

Within weeks after our first report, the corporate office dismissed David Harrison and his wife.

Dr. Michael Doyle knew Dr. Harrison. "So I couldn't believe the stories I was hearing," he said. "If you hear the same stories over and over, you get to think they are true."

Conditions at the office are different now. Dr. Doyle, who's worked over 30 years with the company, is assuring patients that no matter where they are in their treatment plan, they'll be helped at the company's expense.

"What's transpired here is not how we work," Dr. Doyle said. "We want people to know that  patient satisfaction and quality care is everything to our organization. We want people to know they can rely on us."

Annie showed us her new upper dentures. They fit  perfectly and she can chew anything now. "I got pork chops, and I have corn on the cob. I haven't been able to eat this in a long time."

The people who run the office now are determined to complete patient services that were disrupted by irregular practices in the past.

"That's pretty much what we've been doing, working hard to please people," Dr. Doyle said.

David and Jennifer Harrison's neighbors in Morristown say the couple is moving out of the home that they rent. They're apparently moving out of state, neighbors say, possibly to North Carolina.

The Tennessee Dental Board investigation into Dr. Harrison's practices continues.
