KNOXVILLE (WATE) - There is a confirmed case of the mosquito-borne virus called West Nile in East Tennessee.

The Tennessee State Department of Health reports the case was discovered in Greene County. There are also three cases in Memphis and one in Hickman County.

So far, no one in Tennessee has died from the virus.

There have been 1,118 cases and 41 deaths reported so far in United States this year, making 2012 the worst West Nile virus outbreak on record.

The threat of contracting the virus has many people worried, but Knox County health officials said citizens should continue their normal routine.

"Continue to go outside," Knox County Health Department Director of Environmental Health Ronnie Nease said. "Don't be afraid and stay in the house."

Nease recommends to take some precautions when stepping outside.

"All of our products are based on natural ingredients and things that are safe to put on your body," said Katie Ries, an employee of Three Rivers Market on Central Avenue.

DEET is a strong chemical used in many bug repellents and is recommended by the Center for Disease Control for the best protection.

Particular items of clothing can also aid in fending off mosquitos. Local outdoor store River Sports Outfitters has a wide selection of clothing designed to repel the insects.

Mayo Garden Centers in Bearden said they sell numerous products containing Citronella, which contains a scent that is supposed to keep mosquitoes away.

"I suggest whatever works for you, do it, but continue to go outside," Nease said.

Knox County health officials added a few small chores, such as making sure to dump out water in children's outdoor toys and ensuring gutter maintenance can go a long way to eliminating mosquitoes.
