Food City-owned helicopter crashes in Va. lake

ABINGDON, Va. (AP) - Police say a helicopter owned by the Food City grocery chain has crashed into a lake in southwest Virginia.

Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Conroy said early Saturday that the pilot was the only person on board and has not been located. A dive team is searching for him in South Holston Lake.

He said "our effort right now is to locate him." The pilot's name hasn't been released.

Conroy said the crash was first reported around 10:30 p.m. EDT. The lake is in Abingdon, near the Tennessee border.

The police spokesman said the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.

Food City was the corporate sponsor of the Nationwide race Friday night at Bristol Motor Speedway. It wasn't clear if the helicopter's route had anything to do with the race.
