KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knox County Election Commission is recruiting workers for the November 6 election.
In order to work that day, you must meet the following requirements:
- Registered to vote in Knox County
- Able to lift 50 pounds
- Understand and follow written instructions
- Willing to work 14 hours on election day and attend training classes beforehand.
You can apply on the election commission's website.
The commission will host four recruitment meetings in the coming weeks for anyone interested in serving.
Attendees will learn about election law, polling place procedures, and the Hart-Intercivic voting system. Each meeting is expected to last about an hour. The public is invited to attend.
The locations and times are:
- Cedar Bluff Branch Library at 9045 Cross Park Drive - Wednesday, September 5 at 6:00 p.m.
- John T. O'Connor Center at 611 Winona Street - Monday, September 10 at 10:00 a.m.
- Howard Pinkston Branch Library at 7732 Martin Mill Pike - on Tuesday, September 11 at 6:00 p.m.
- Halls Senior Center at 4405 Crippen Road - Wednesday, September 12 at 6:00 p.m.
Workers receive $60 for the four-hour training class, which all new workers must complete, and $35 for the mandatory class just prior to the election, according to county Administrator of Elections Clifford A. Rodgers. This means they could receive a total of $220.
"It takes more than 600 election officials to run a presidential election in Knox County," Rodgers said. "Working as an election official is a great way to serve our community."
Governmental employees (federal, state, city, or county) cannot serve as election officials. Neither can employees of the Knoxville Utilities Board or Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
School teachers and employees of higher education may serve.
High school students who are 17 or older are also permitted to serve.
