KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A New Orleans-area woman and her son relocated to East Tennessee after her home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Now she's welcoming any friends and relatives from home who need a place to stay during Isaac.
From a Super Bowl memoir on the wall to Saints tableware, it's easy to tell Shaun Fulco is a transplant. But she says the most valued items from her hometown are the photos and heirlooms she salvaged from her own house, destroyed seven years ago.
In fact, she opened a bath and body boutique just days before the devastation.
"I closed the store, went home, and told Jacob who was 11-years-old to put some clothes in a suitcase," Fulco explained about when she decided to leave with her son.
She showed us photos of her destroyed home and business. Eventually the pair made East Tennessee their home away from home.
"It was time for me to decide where I wanted to start over with Jacob and we chose here. I think it was a great decision," Fulco said.
She worries that Hurricane Isaac could be worse than Katrina.
"We always grew up hearing that if a storm ever came up the mouth of the Mississippi, it would be bad," she explained.
She says she's opened up her home to many friends and relatives planning to evacuate. In fact when 6 News visited her on Monday, she was getting her guest bedroom ready, complete with an LSU blanket.
"Anyone who wants to get here, it'll cost you a tank or two of gas, but you've got a place to stay. You can go back when it's all over," Fulco said.
