KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Young-Williams Animal Center's dog and puppy adoption areas at one location are temporarily closed after several dogs developed a contagious upper respiratory infection.

The adoptions at 3201 Division Street are expected to resume on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

The shelter's staff and veterinary team have quarantined the dog adoption area to prevent the spread of infection, and they're conducting medical testing.

Dog and puppy adoptions are still available at the Young-Williams Animal Village location at 6400 Kingston Pike on Bearden Hill.

The cat and small mammal adoption areas will remain open at the Division Street location.

Due to the medical testing, space is extremely limited for incoming animals at Division Street.

While Young-Williams never turns away an animal, owners wishing to surrender their pets are encouraged to wait until after Tuesday, if at all possible.

Young-Williams has canceled the adoption event on Saturday, Sept. 1, at Big Lots, 4835 N. Broadway so the staff can focus their resources on caring for the dogs at the shelter.
