Chemical thrown in face of Monroe County deputy

TELLICO PLAINS (WATE) - A Monroe County man is facing felony charges after allegedly throwing dangerous chemicals into the face of a Monroe County sheriff's deputy.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Department says its officers were trying to arrest three suspects when one of them threw what is believed to be a canister filled with a lye-based drain cleaner at Lt. Josh Woods.

Deputies said the chemical burned the officer's hands, face and upper body.

Woods was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and released.

The suspect, identified as Gregory Cathey, 28, was arrested for resisting arrest and aggravated assault on an officer.
