Officers seize jewelry at Alcoa store, owner cited over buying scrap

ALCOA (WATE) - Authorities seized several thousands of dollars worth of cash and jewelry Tuesday during a search at a gold buyer's store in Alcoa.

The search at Malone's Jewelers, 332 Gill Street, followed several complaints that the business was not asking for IDs or supplying transaction information to law enforcement when buying scrap jewelry.

Store owner Danny Dossett Malone, 49, was cited with noncompliance of Tennessee scrap jewelry laws. The Blount County Sheriff's Office said more charges against Malone are pending.

State laws require a business that purchases scrap jewelry and precious metals to register with law enforcement and ask the seller for valid ID.

The purchase must be held for 20 days before resale. The business also has to report the purchase to law enforcement by noon of the next business day.

The sheriff's office said an undercover operative went to Malone's a few days ago and verified the owner's noncompliance.

Alcoa police helped sheriff's officers with the search and seizure.

Anyone with complaints about scrap metal or jewelry buying can call the sheriff's office criminal investigation division at 865-273-5001, the crime hotline at 865-273-5200 or use the text-a-tip program online.
