Knoxville restaurant workers warned about scam

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - At least six businesses in the Knoxville area have had hundreds of dollars stolen in a bail bond scam. A business in Sevier County has also reported being contacted by the scammer.

According to investigators with the Knoxville Police Department and Knox County Sheriff's Office, a scammer is calling the fast food restaurants saying he's an officer. He then informs employees he stopped their boss for speeding and found illegal drugs in his possession.

The scammer says the boss does not have enough money to make bail. The caller tells the workers their boss has asked them to take money from the till or safe to post bail. The caller then arranges a way to pick up the money.

The suspect is usually driving a light colored SUV, according to investigators.

He is described as a white male, 5'2" to 5'7" tall, 130 to 170 pounds and bald.

Authorities say any legitimate bail bondsman will have proper identification.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Knoxville Police Department at (865) 215-7212 or the Knox County Sheriff's Office at (865) 215-2243.
