KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County school board members voted Wednesday to extend the contract with Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre.

The school board also voted to give all non-certified school system employees a two-percent pay raise.

The board's vote to approve McIntyre's contract through 2016 comes after members voted to give McIntyre a satisfactory performance review.

Some board members said Wednesday they thought McIntyre had not made enough progress in his first four years, but most said the superintendent deserves time to follow through on the initiatives he began.

"I too don't feel like we're making progress as fast as I'd like to make it, but at the same time I have to acknowledge that we're making progress and that we have a plan in place," said board member Thomas Deakins.

In the superintendent's review board members called on McIntyre to work towards closing achievement gaps and help remove several schools from the state's focus list.
