Voter IDs at Knox County driver service center on 2 Saturdays

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The Knox County Driver Service Center will be open on two Saturdays this fall to make photo IDs for voters.

A new state law requires citizens to show a federal or state-issued photo ID to vote at the polls. The law also requires the Department of Safety and Homeland Security to issue photo IDs for voting at no charge.

The Knox County center at 7320 Region Lane will be open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 6 and Saturday, November 3.

The center will only issue voter photo IDs and change non-photo driver licenses into photo driver licenses. No other services will be available during the special hours.

As of September 6, the Safety Department had issued 22,355 photo IDs for voters. Officials say the vast majority (20,967) were non-photo driver licenses that were converted. A total of 1,388 were original photo ID cards.
