KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A teen boy was shot at least one time in the torso near Austin-East High School in East Knoxville on Friday afternoon.
Knoxville police have identified the victim as 14-year-old Lashawn Pierson, a Vine Middle Magnet School student. He was taken to UT Medical Center.
Police say several witnesses were taken to the safety building for questioning.
Many people in the neighborhood heard the gunshots.
"I heard eight or nine gun shots," said neighbor Patricia Coker. "It sounded like they were in my yard, so that's why I opened my door and I seen him there. He was just laying there. He had slumped down on the brick wall."
The shooting was in front of some homes about a block away from the school, which is at 2800 Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue.
The shooting happened around 4:30 p.m. Classes dismissed at 4:00 p.m.
Many students say the shooting makes them nervous.
"Makes me scared," said AEHS junior Barisha Johnson, "Makes me feel unsafe to come to this school or walk to this school in the morning."
Police officials say Pierson is in serious condition and should be moved to a room on Saturday.
"I just want to say y'all are in my prayers," said AEHS freshman Roxanna Mize. "I pray he gets better. I was close to him."
A motive for the shooting still has not been released.
