Digital parking meters installed in downtown Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The city of Knoxville installs its first digital multi-space parking meters.

Crews installed two new meters on the 100 block of Gay Street Monday morning.

The system accepts bills and credit cards at a cost of $1 per hour with a two hour limit. It's part of a pilot project for the city.

The city passed an ordinance in the Spring approving $35,000 for the purchase. City officials said the new meters are an improvement over the existing ones. Drivers will not have to pay for the parking just yet because the meters will not be running until October 1st.

The city plans to look at other areas to possibly install this system in future.
