Morgan County principal removed from position after paddling student

SUNBRIGHT (WATE) - The principal of Sunbright School has been removed from her position over the way she paddled a student, officials said Wednesday.

Dr. Penny Boyd was originally suspended indefinitely without pay on August 31 by Director of Schools Dr. Edd Diden.

The parents of a kindergarten student, Lukas Williams, five, said they gave permission for administrators to paddle their child, but they never expected to find large bruises all over his buttocks.

The boy's family made a complaint about the paddling to officials. His mother also spoke to the school board about the incident, calling for Boyd's dismissal.

Dr. Diden and other administrative staff completed an investigation into the complaint, finding that  Boyd's use of corporal punishment was "unreasonable and excessive" as defined by Morgan County Board of Education policy.

Boyd was removed from the principalship at Sunbright School. She remains on suspension until a final decision is made on her employment status with the school system.
