CLAXTON (WATE) - Someone posing as a member of the Claxton Volunteer Fire Department recently tried to get money from two homeowners, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.
The scam artist has apparently gone door to door on Old Edgemoor Road soliciting money from residents. The scammer also claimed if homeowners don't pay the fire department won't respond if there's a fire.
Although two homeowners told Fire Chief Donnie Shipley about the incidents, the sheriff's office says there may be more victims of the scam. Those two residents didn't pay because they thought the request was suspicious.
Chief Shipley assures all residents the fire department responds to all fires, medical calls and other emergencies in the Claxton community.
The fire department also does not solicit door to door.
The sheriff's office will investigate these incidents as attempted fraud.
No description of the scammer is available. Investigators will follow up to identify the suspect.
