iPhone pre-orders meet demand expectations in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The much anticipated iPhone 5 has had tech lovers excited since before the announcement on Wednesday.

Now people are lining up in Knoxville, hoping to get one of the first ones.

"I've got a 4 that I've had a couple, a little over two years and so when the 5 come out, I waited on the 4S and I didn't get it, so when the 5 come out I wanted to go ahead and pre-order," said AT&T customer Swanson Tate.

The iPhone 5 has a larger screen and is 4G. "The 4 and the 4S, really the only difference I could tell was Siri and the battery life, and so I just chose to wait until the 5," Tate added.

For some retail stores, pre-orders are extra exciting. "We, for the first time, have been able to participate in the pre-order of the iPhone from the same day Verizon and Apple are doing it and we were able to start at 7:00 a.m. and we've had a steady flow of people coming into our stores since then," explained Cellular Sales Chief Operating Officer J.T. Thome.

Retailers say the phone is as popular as expected. "We've had people waiting before we actually opened the store, and we have plenty of appointments for later today with people actually calling in, so we're excited and we're prepared to handle the traffic flow today," said Verizon store manager Jeremy Long.

Faithful iPhone users say they can't wait to get their new toy. "I use my phone a lot throughout the day. I've dropped it, beat it to death. Apple makes a really good product, and that's why I'm here early to get another one," Tate explained.

You don't need to pre-order the iPhone 5 to get one. Stores will have some available on a first-come, first-serve basis next Friday, September 21.
