Majors' jersey to retire before Florida game

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - The University of Tennessee will retire Johnny Majors' No. 45 jersey before the Florida game on Saturday evening in order to recognize his accomplishments as a football player, according to UT Sports.

His jersey is the eighth to ever be honored by the Vols.

Majors played for UT from 1954-1956. He received SEC Player of the Year honors and All-SEC selection in both 1955 and 1956. Majors was also a 1987 inductee of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.

Majors graduated from Huntland High School and is originally from Lynchburg, Tennessee. He ended his Volunteer football career with 1,622 yards rushing and 15 touchdowns on 387 attempts.

Although the jersey is being retired, the number 45 is not being taken out of circulation due to new criteria for these honors.

Some other UT football players who have had their jerseys retired include Peyton Manning, Bill Nowling and Doug Atkins.
