KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Knox County school children were scheduled to begin receiving free flu vaccines Monday.

This is the eighth year the FluMist intranasal vaccine has been given to students at schools. The project is administered by the Knox County Health Department.

School and health department officials say no child will be vaccinated without a completed, signed and returned consent form.

Forms are available online at https://knox.zippslip.com/.

Parents can also enroll their child from by smartphone when the child is dropped off at school by using a QR code provided by signs posted at the schools.

Vaccination clinics at the schools will continue through Oct. 12. A detailed schedule is posted online.

Children who missed the clinic at their school may get a free vaccine at any health department location.

Due to decreased federal and state funding to buy vaccine, the health department will bill the insurance companies of children who are insured. Parents are asked to provide their insurance information on the consent forms.

No costs will be passed on to parents.

To help cover vaccine costs for children without insurance, a new donation feature is available. Parents can donate during the consent process. The general public can also donate online.

The Metropolitan Drug Commission is partnering with the health department to make the donations possible. Those are tax deductible. All funds go directly to an account specified to purchase vaccine.
