NEWPORT (WATE) - A Cocke County couple was arrested Sunday after one of their children called 911 saying they were afraid because their parents were doing drugs.

When sheriff's officers responded to the home on Valley View Drive, they said they found the daughter crying on the front porch.

Scott Jason Shelton, 39, agreed to let the officers search his room.

Shelton's nightstand had a tin of marijuana and rolling papers, according to the arrest report.

He's charged with possession of Schedule IV drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officers also searched Melissa Kaye Ramsey's room, car and purse. Their report says they found several cut straws in her room with her insurance cards and straws with residue in her purse.

A bottle of 140 oxycodone pills in Ramsey's purse was empty, according to her arrest report, although it was filled four days earlier, and a bottle of Diazepam was mostly empty after just four days.

Plus, officers said they found Ramsey's chair arm on fire on the back porch.

Ramsey, 34, is charged with reckless endangerment, sale and delivery of Schedule II and Schedule IV drugs, vandalism and possession of drug paraphernalia.
