PARROTTSVILLE (WATE) - Officials said a Cocke County elementary school student showed off a disabled hand grenade and a bullet Thursday morning while he was riding the bus.

The 10-year-old student attends Parrottsville Elementary School, according to Cocke County Schools Safety Supervisor Casey Kelly.

Several students saw the items on the bus and told teachers, who in turn told Principal Dr. Robert Vick.

The grenade had been drilled and the internal components removed. The round was a .50 caliber.

However, Principal Vick took the grenade and bullet about 100 yards away from the school and called the sheriff's office.

The school was not evacuated. Kelley said no students were ever in danger.

Parrottsville Elementary has a zero-tolerance policy, but Kelley says officials weren't sure yet if the grenade violated that.
