FARRAGUT (WATE) - The much anticipated iPhone 5 is finally in the hands of the determined first customers. People started camping out at Verizon in Turkey Creek at 8:00 Thursday night.
The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster "fourth generation" mobile networks.
One die-hard iPhone fan says it's his tradition to get it on the first day. He's had every single iPhone.
Ed Foley said pre-ordering just isn't for him. "You don't know if they'll come in. If it comes UPS or whatever it may not get here, or it may get here at the end of the day. You have no idea. And it's kind of fun to wait in line."
The total time from when the customer walks in the door, completes their transaction and leaves is only about 15-20 minutes.
"Everyone has kind of an idea of what the iPhone does already, but now we're going to go further and show and demo. Customers are going to have more opportunities to use things they're going to use every day," explained Verizon store manager Jeremy Long.
Within minutes, customers already had a first impression of the new device. "It's smaller and lighter, which is really cool," Foley said. "Other than that, I really haven't had a chance to check it out much."
But the sleek design and faster speeds weren't enough to sway Kelly Hall into getting an iPhone 5 for herself. "No, I don't need any more technology," she said.
Due to the secrecy surrounding the release, many accessories out Friday are labeled "for the new iPhone" rather than "for the iPhone 5."
