JOHNSON CITY (AP) - The iconic Doughboy statue in Johnson City has been removed from its post for the first time in more than 75 years.

The Johnson City Press reports that the replica of a World War I infantry solider is being restored, and will return to its place of honor at the city's Memorial Park, where it will be the centerpiece of the surrounding plaza.

Architect Tony Street said the statue will be stabilized, cleaned up and repainted.

Replications of E.M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" are memorials to World War I infantry soldiers who were known as doughboys. The statue in Johnson City was unveiled on Nov. 11, 1935.
