5K generates money for Channon Christian memorial scholarship fund


MARYVILLE (WATE) - The Channon Gail Christian Memorial Foundation 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk takes place in Maryville on Sunday, October 7.

The event is hosted by Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson. It starts there at 3:00 p.m. at 1820 W. Lamar Alexander Parkway.

If you pre-register by September 28, the cost is $25. After that, it's $30. Active military members can register with their ID for $20. It includes a meal for participants.

Awards will be given to the top three overall finishers (male/female), the top male/female master finisher (40+), the top male/female grandmaster finisher (50+), top male/female veteran finisher (60+) and top three male/female finishers in each age group.

The event honors the memory of Channon Gail Christian. Proceeds will benefit her memorial scholarship fund.

The Channon Christian Foundation is a non-profit organized under  the 501-c3 guidelines of the IRS.

Christian and her boyfriend, Chris Newsom, were murdered in Knoxville in January 2007. Her life ambition was to help children in some way.

The Channon Christian Memorial Scholarship is presented to a Farragut High School senior girl who will attend the University of Tennessee. This will be the fourth year the scholarship is awarded.

This year the scholarship amount is $5,000.
