Memphis mayor wants review of police department

Associated Press

MEMPHIS (AP) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. is ordering a review of internal police procedures following repeated cases of alleged officer misconduct, including an off-duty officer's involvement in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy.

Wharton said Tuesday that acts of police misconduct erode public trust and will not be tolerated. He said he is bringing in an outside consultant with a law enforcement background to help conduct a review of procedures involving officer accountability, recruitment and hiring practices, education and training, and the effectiveness of the department's internal affairs arm.

Wharton said he could provide few details about the boy's shooting on Monday night. He did acknowledge that the shooting was related to an attempted robbery.

Wharton has asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation for help investigating the shooting.
