City of Knoxville does new type of paving project in downtown

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - City of Knoxville contractors will pave Summit Hill Drive from Henley Street to S. Central Street this weekend, along with some side streets.

The project is the first in the city to use a new paving mix that includes recycled shingles.

The paving is scheduled to begin the evening of Friday, September 28. Weather permitting, it's expected to finish on Sunday, September 30.

Lanes will be closed on a rotating basis, and through traffic will be maintained throughout the project.

The streets being resurfaced are:

  • W. Summit Hill Drive from Henley Street to S. Central Street
  • Cafego Place from Locust Street to Walnut Street
  • Locust Street from W. Vine Avenue to South End
  • Walnut Street from W. Vine Avenue to W. Summit Hill Drive

Work begins at 6:00 p.m. Friday on the side streets and moves onto W. Summit Hill after 8:00 p.m.

This paving work is unique because the city chose it as a test project for using recycled shingles in the asphalt mix.

In 2011, the Tennessee Department of Transportation did a successful test project using recycled shingles on State Route 62 in Morgan County.

The potential benefits of using shingles include decreased amounts of virgin asphalt needed for the mix, increased pavement stiffness, less likelihood to form ruts and way to use shingle waste and scrap.

The asphalt shouldn't look any different.
