6 Sports Director Jim Wogan diagnosed with prostate cancer
KNOXVILLE (WATE) - 6 Sports Director Jim Wogan said Friday he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
Wogan, who has been covering sports for WATE 6 News for more than 20 years, will take some time off from his broadcast duties to have surgery and recover.
"I initially considered delaying surgery until December, but after discussions with my wife Mary, I have elected to move forward and have the procedure in October," Wogan said it a statement released Friday. "I will be sidelined from work for a few weeks."
In making the announcement, Wogan made it clear he was not leaving WATE 6 for long.
"On a positive note, my cancer was discovered early and I fully expect to lead a much longer life. For that, I want to thank the diligence and attentiveness of my doctors and the persistence of my wife who has always encouraged regular physicals," he said.
Wogan has been honored with numerous awards in his broadcast career, including two Mid-South Region Emmys. He is a five-time winner of the AP award for Best Sportscast in Tennessee.
