Jury deadlocks on whether woman tried to kill son

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - A jury has deadlocked in the trial of a Smyrna woman who was accused of attempting to smother her 4-year-old son.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that jurors deliberated all day Friday before telling the judge that they remained divided in the case of Monica Hammers, who was charged with attempted aggravated child abuse.

Prosecutors had originally charged Hammers with attempted murder for allegedly holding a pillow over her son's face while he was in a Chattanooga hospital, but that charge was dismissed during the trial.

Hammers' attorney, Harry Christensen, said he was hoping to win the case, but was glad not to lose. He said he would ask the court to allow Hammers supervised visits with her son.

Attorneys said a status hearing would be held in December.
