Aquarium installs new LED lights after hail damage

CHATTANOOGA (AP) - The Tennessee Aquarium's lights that illuminate the Chattanooga skyline are getting an upgrade to a more energy-efficient system.

The aquarium's cathode lighting system that has been in place for 20 years was severely damaged during a hailstorm on March 2. The aquarium decided to install a new light-emitting diode or LED system, which uses only about a quarter of the power required by the previous system.

The new lighting system is also computer-controlled and will allow the aquarium to display a rainbow of colors or animated sequences.

A demonstration of the new lighting system will begin at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. The best places to view the lighted peaks of the aquarium are along the Chattanooga Riverfront and on the arch in front of the aquarium.
