Man killed in crash while fleeing from Knoxville police

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A driver died early Thursday morning after fleeing from a police officer who was searching for another suspect.

Around 3:30 a.m., an officer witnessed a driver run a stop sign on Coffey Street and attempted to pull over the vehicle. Before he could, the driver pulled his SUV over and ran from the scene.

The SUV began rolling backward and hit the officer's cruiser, causing minor damage.

Several other officers then came to the scene to help look for the suspect.

The driver of a different SUV, 25-year-old Brandon Parris, saw one of the responding officers and quickly turned and fled the scene.

The responding officer followed Parris, but before she could catch up with him, he crashed the SUV on nearby Mayfield Street.

A police investigation found that Parris was speeding, left the left side of the road, overcorrected, ran off of the right side of the road, hit a utility pole and then a tree.

The SUV then flipped, hitting another tree and came to rest on its roof in the road.

Parris was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man that fled on foot from the initial call was never found. Police are still looking for him.
