Memphis mother pleads guilty in connection with death

MEMPHIS (AP) - A Memphis woman has pleaded guilty in connection with the beating death of her 18-month-old daughter.

The Commercial Appeal reports 30-year-old Shamira Ivory pleaded guilty Friday in Criminal Court to facilitation of aggravated child neglect and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Ivory, who has been in jail since 2008, was to be released to begin serving 12 years' probation.

Defense attorney Joseph Ozment said the four years was enough to make her eligible for immediate parole.

Ivory and her boyfriend, 35-year-old Gary Hawkins, were arrested in September 2008 after Shamia Ivory died.

Hawkins' lawyer argued at his trial that Ivory killed the child, but Ivory said she returned home to find that her daughter appeared sick.

Hawkins was convicted of murder in the perpetration of aggravated child neglect and sentenced to life in prison.
