Knox officer, Newport chief,1 other injured in motorcycle crash

KNOXVILLE (WATE) - A Knox County Sheriff's Office motorcycle officer, the Police Chief of the Newport Police Department and one other were transported to UT Hospital after a motorcycle wreck during the "Ride for Life" on Saturday morning.

According to the KCSO, a group of motorcycle riders were driving northbound on Clinton Highway around 11:20 a.m.

NPD Chief Maurice Shults then struck the saddlebag of KCSO Sgt. Roger Sexton's motorcycle. Shults was thrown off his motorcycle and landed in the median.

These chain of events caused Donald Zerillo to lose control of his motorcycle, which struck the back of Clyde Cowan's motorcycle. Zerillo's bike then fell over.

Sgt. Sexton and Shults were transported to UT Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Rural Metro transported Zerillo to UT Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.

Shults was released from the hospital on Saturday afternoon.  He tore a ligament in his left shoulder.

Alcohol was not a factor in this accident. The KCSO is investigating the cause of the crash.
