Police charge boyfriend in woman's death

JOHNSON CITY (AP) - Police say the boyfriend of a woman whose body was found in a Carter County lake has been charged with killing her.

Police told the Johnson City Press on Friday that 31-year-old Steven Odell Bennett is accused of choking and beating to death 28-year-old Vonda Berry Marshall Donaldson before dumping her body in Watauga Lake. Police say Bennett, who was paroled three months ago, is charged with second-degree murder and abuse of a corpse.

The search for Donaldson began in Johnson City after the woman's family reported her missing last weekend. Her body was found in the lake on Wednesday.

It was unclear Saturday whether Bennett had an attorney. He was set to be arraigned on the charges Monday.
